Business Spotlight: Dunn Brothers
Located in what used to be “downtown Coon Rapids” on the corner of Northdale and Foley Boulevard, sits a family-owned Dunn Brothers Coffee. While the Dunn Brothers Coffee company started in 1987 at its first location near Macalester College in St. Paul, now over 30 years later, the company has expanded to over 80 locations in many other communities, all of which have local ownership. Marv Sorvala owns the Dunn Brothers Coffee in Coon Rapids.
Sorvala was formerly a Civil Engineer for 22 years. Along with his opportunity to retire, came the question, “what’s next?” Sorvala’s late wife insisted he open a coffee shop… but not just any coffee shop - it had to be a Dunn Brothers Coffee shop because they loved the coffee so much. Sorvala and his daughter, Store Manager Lisa Fiksen, opened up their Dunn Brothers Coffee shop in April 2007. They picked the active intersection of Northdale and Foley Boulevard because they appreciated the nearby neighborhoods and schools. The duo want coffee-lovers near and far, regular visitors or first-time customers to all feel at home during their visit to Dunn Brothers.
“Day-to-day, I get to see these people and have conversations about their daily lives,” Fiksen says. “We get to know people while we serve them… even the poodles that come every day through the drive-thru to get their puppy treat.” Fiksen puts her culinary arts degree to good use by overseeing the crafted drinks and food served at the store.
Nowadays, there might be a coffee shop on nearly every corner, but this corner puts a little more effort into the fresh taste of coffee. The coffee served at Dunn Brothers is never more than six days old because staff members roast small batches of coffee each morning. Sorvala says, “Fresh roasted coffee gives out carbon dioxide for 2-3 weeks. After that, it takes more oxygen and the coffee will start to taste older. You will notice a taste difference between fresh coffee versus store-bought coffee that has been sitting on the shelf for six months.”
Along with fresh roasted coffee beans, Dunn Brothers also puts extra effort into purchasing its beans straight from the source. Beans are taste-tested in different parts of the world, such as Uganda, Argentina and Columbia. Dunn Brothers is proud to support farmers with sustainable practices that avoid using any commercial fertilizers on their crops.
Sorvala and Fiksen invite the Coon Rapids community over to relax and have a cup of coffee with a sandwich… even non-coffee drinkers will enjoy the fresh food and the scent of freshly roasted coffee beans.
