On a trial basis, the Coon Rapids Recycling Center is now accepting "food grade" Styrofoam in addition to the "rigid" Styrofoam the Center has always accepted.
Food grade Styrofoam refers to the type of material used for food takeout containers, cups and meat trays. In order for the Recycling Center to be able to process the additional material, the food grade Styrofoam must be clean and white, without colored logos or print of any kind. Printed items or those with with grease or food residue will contaminate the process.
The Recycling Center encourages people to bring in clean, white Styrofoam containers throughout October and maybe longer, if the program goes well. The Recycling Center will post updates about Styrofoam collection on the City website. If the Styrofoam trial proves successful, the Recycling Center has grant money available to cover the cost of processing the extra materials.
