2017 Crime Rates for Coon Rapids

Police

According to data from the 2017 Uniform Crime Report, crime statistics in the city went up slightly in a few areas as compared to 2016, but rates are still lower overall than historical averages. The number of thefts went down in 2017, but the amount of burglaries went up compared to 2016. Many of the burglaries in 2017 were tied to a concentrated effort among thieves who were finding garage doors left open at homes and unlocked doors.

Brad Wise, Coon Rapids Police Chief says, “The increase in burglaries we saw in 2017 was unfortunate because many of those crimes were easy for the burglars to commit. Many cases involved doors being left unlocked or overhead garage doors left open overnight. We want to remind residents to not be complacent. Always practice crime prevention techniques – lock your doors and windows, take all valuables out of your vehicles and look out for your neighbors. Get to know them. If they mistakenly left their garage door open at night, call them and help them. Don’t make it easy for thieves.”

The Uniform Crime Report, produced by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, is a reporting tool that is used to track crime around the state.  The data is also submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program, to allow for crime rate comparisons nationwide.

Breakdown of the Data
