For those looking to escape the busy city, there is a new option available and it’s closer than you might think. Several campsites have been established near Ramsey on the Mississippi River. On July 28th, close to 30 volunteers launched canoes from the Mississippi West Regional Park, headed for Foster and Cloquet islands.“It’s a great place for people to come and enjoy this really tranquil wilderness just outside of the twin cities,” said Allie Dart, a Park Ranger with the National Park Service. The Department of Natural Resources, Mississippi Park Connection and financial donors have succeeded in establishing a new camp site on Foster Island and two on Cloquet Island.“The campsites have picnic tables, fire ring and tent pad as well as a latrine. So it’s really all ready to go for you once you get there,” said Mary Hammes with Mississippi Park Connection. The sites are first come, first served and can only be accessed by boat. Fortunately, you don’t need to own a canoe or kayak to get there. Rental kayaks are available through the paddle share program.Visit http://www.paddleshare.org to learn how you can rent your own kayak.
