Visitors to a popular lake in Columbus, Minnesota now have a place to remember military members and their families. On July 7th a new Veterans’ memorial was dedicated at Coon Lake County Park. The memorial features seven flags, two benches, and personalized paver stones in front of a plaques that reads:“The community of Coon Lake dedicates this site to show our never ending appreciation, respect and gratitude to those who have and will serve in the armed forces of the United States of America and the loved ones who stand by them. Remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”U.S. Navy Korean War Veteran Edward Fiore first approached Anoka County Commissioner Julie Braastad about the idea in July of 2017.“He cornered me and just said I have this idea I want to run by you and I thought it was fantastic,” said Braastad. Two weeks later both the Coon Lake Community Senior Center and the Coon Lake Improvement Association had raised $10,000 for the project. Charitable gaming organizations covered the rest. The land for the memorial was donated by Anoka County.“This today is in memory of all those who have served, those that are serving and those who will serve,” said Fiore at the dedication ceremony.Money for a WWII memorial is being raised with the sale of paver stones, inscribed with a personal tribute. They will join those already installed at the new memorial. Those interested in purchasing a stone can contact Anoka County Parks at 763-324-3300.
