A Coon Rapids Based Nonprofit is keeping its doors open Easter Weekend to help disadvantaged children around the world. The Christian organization Feed My Starving Children is looking for volunteers to assemble meals that will be shipped to one of 70 countries.“Kids who are literally starving, kids who are in a situation that they just aren’t able to provide for themselves,” said Judy Watke, FMSC’s Development Manager.Volunteers receive a brief orientation before taking positions around tables with food ingredients and packaging materials.“They’re all here for about two hours and because we use a great assembly of these meals you get to throw the ingredients in the bag, box them up,” Watke said. Each bag contains a combination of vitamins, vegetables, soy protein and rice. One bag equals six meals.“It’s one of the few volunteer things that kids can participate in. They take kids down to five years old and it’s a real learning experience for the kids and they have fun and we can do it together as a family,” said Janet LaFrence with Corner Stone Church Crystal. LaFrence said she first started volunteering at the Coon Rapids facility 20 years ago.“The best part is after you’re all done and they tell you how many boxes you packed and how many kids they will feed. You just go home with a great feeling,” LaFrence said.FMSC operates six days a week. On Easter Weekend it’s looking for donations of $50 per individual or $150 per household to cover the cost of the ingredients.“This is a great opportunity for families who are coming together just to come in and to give back,” Watke said.FMSC’s Coon Rapids facility is located at 401 - 93rd Avenue NW.The session on Easter Friday will be between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. On Holy Saturday there will be sessions from between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and again from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.To reserve a spot online visit fmsc.org/fullyinvested.
