The city of Coon Rapids is one of few cities in the Twin Cities area that has a full-time Fire Department, serving residents 24 hours a day. The Department is staffed by 31 career and 20 paid-on-call firefighters who staff 3 stations 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Fire Department provides fire suppression, emergency medical service, hazardous material accident mitigation, automobile extrications, ice rescue, fire prevention, fire inspections and education services.
Fire Chief John Piper
The department employs a Chief, Assistant Chief, Fire Marshal, 3 Battalion Chiefs, 3 Captains, 3 shift Fire Inspectors, a 40 hour Fire Inspector, 18 full-time Firefighters and one Administrative Secretary. Paid-on-Call members are promoted as career positions become available.
All career and many Paid-on-Call firefighters are trained EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians).
