Six Homes Featured on Home Remodeling Tour

Thinking of a home remodel? Then you won’t want to miss an upcoming remodeling tour in Coon Rapids featuring six homes that feature everything from new kitchens and bathrooms to backyards that feel like an island retreat.

"It was the, hopefully final project in a series of about seven," said Elisabeth Iribe about her family’s 2016 remodeling project.

The Iribe family have endured five major remodeling projects in the past five years. The kitchen was the last for their 1973 rambler home.

"We bumped out six and a half feet towards the woods. We tore out absolutely everything: new cabinets, new countertops, new windows.”

A key feature at the center island, a giant, custom-built cherry wood countertop.

“Most people really freak out that we cut right on it,” Iribe said.

The warmth of wood not only adds beauty, but space.

"It accommodates pretty much all of our storage and prep needs. It’s amazing it’s so nice, it keeps the rest of the kitchen clean, it makes it fun to cook, which is not my favorite thing to do, but this kitchen actually makes it fun."

Elisabeth found financial help, through the city of Coon Rapids Home for Generations II program...a grant and rebate program available to homeowners with homes at least 20 years old...and remodeling projects worth 35,000 dollars or more.

“It is intended to encourage people to do larger remodeling projects,” said Neighborhood Coordinator Kristin DeGrande who runs the Home for Generations II program.

“Through this program there are grants available up to $5,000, building permit rebates, subsidized architectural consultations and low interest loans,” DeGrande explained.

“Since the Home for Generations II program began four years ago, the Iribe’s home is one of 90 finished remodeling projects that have taken advantage of the money from the program."

On May 21st from noon to 4 p.m., the fourth annual Coon Rapids Home Remodeling Tour will showcase homes which have used the Home for Generation II program.

“It’s a great opportunity to see other remodeling projects in our community that are happening right now,” said DeGrande. “And to get ideas regarding upcoming projects and hopefully it does motivate homeowners to start thinking about their own homes and home they can update their homes and stay in Coon Rapids.”

And that’s something the Iribe family is planning on.

"I think it’s a really phenomenal program," Elisabeth said.
